The material

What is high pressure laminate (HPL)?

High pressure laminate, or HPL, is a dense decorative surface material made by fusing multiple layers of resin-saturated kraft paper together with a printed décor sheet and a clear protective overlay. These layers are pressed at roughly 150 °C under more than 1,400 psi (about 7 MPa) of pressure, which permanently bonds them into a single hard panel. That high heat and high pressure are exactly where high pressure laminate gets its name — and why it is so much tougher than ordinary surface films. The material and its performance are defined internationally by ISO 4586.

The result is a laminate that is highly resistant to scratches, impact, moisture, heat and everyday wear. HPL is hygienic and easy to clean, its colours and patterns stay fast over years of use, and it can be produced in an enormous range of looks — woodgrains, stones, solid colours, metallics and custom prints. Because of this balance of durability and design freedom, high pressure laminate is specified for countertops, furniture, cabinetry, wall and ceiling panels, flooring, toilet partitions and building facades all over the world.

HPL is sold in two main forms. Thin HPL sheets (usually 0.6–1.2 mm) are bonded onto a substrate such as MDF, plywood or particleboard to create finished panels. Thicker compact HPL boards are self-supporting and need no backing at all. Compared with low pressure laminate (LPL), which is fused directly onto a board at lower pressure, high pressure laminate is denser, stronger and far more durable. In depth

A high pressure laminate for every requirement

No two projects ask the same thing of a surface, which is why we manufacture a full family of high pressure laminates rather than a single product. The starting point for most jobs is our decorative HPL sheet — a thin laminate bonded to a substrate to create doors, panels, worktops and shelving in any of our 1,000-plus designs. Where a curved or wrapped edge is needed, postforming HPL bends around profiles to give a seamless, joint-free finish that is popular for kitchen worktops and reception desks.

Compact and high-performance boards

When a surface has to stand on its own or survive demanding conditions, our compact laminate is the answer. These solid, self-supporting boards need no backing and are naturally water-resistant, which makes them ideal for toilet partitions, locker systems, lab furniture and wet areas. For laboratories and industrial settings, our chemical-resistant compact board adds protection against acids, alkalis and aggressive reagents, while antibacterial HPL brings hygienic, bacteria-inhibiting surfaces to hospitals, clinics and food-preparation areas.

Safety and specialist surfaces

For facades and high-rise projects where fire performance is non-negotiable, our A-grade non-combustible board delivers fire-rated HPL that meets Class A / B1 requirements. Beyond performance, our specialist decorative laminates open up new design possibilities: metal plate laminate recreates brushed and polished metals, magnetic laminate doubles as a writable whiteboard, color core laminate removes the dark edge line for clean exposed details, and traceless board offers a super-matt, anti-fingerprint finish. When you need something truly unique, our art and custom boards print your own design, logo or artwork onto durable HPL.

By application

High pressure laminate applications

Not sure which laminate you need? Start from where it will be used. High pressure laminate performs across both interior and exterior projects — from kitchen countertops and furniture to building facades and washroom partitions.

Surfaces for interiors and exteriors

High pressure laminate earns its place across so many projects because the same core material can be engineered for very different demands. In kitchens and bathrooms, HPL countertops and worktops shrug off heat, knocks and spills while offering stone and woodgrain looks at a far lower cost than natural materials. Throughout the rest of the home and office, HPL is the surface of choice for furniture and cabinets — wardrobe doors, kitchen units, reception desks, tables and shelving — because it keeps its finish through years of daily handling.

In commercial and public buildings, durability and hygiene matter even more. Hard-wearing HPL flooring and raised-access panels handle constant foot traffic, while decorative wall and ceiling panels give corridors, lobbies and retail interiors a wipe-clean, design-rich finish. For washrooms and changing rooms, water-resistant compact HPL toilet partitions and cubicles stand up to moisture, cleaning chemicals and heavy use without warping or swelling.

Outside the building envelope, exterior-grade and fire-rated panels make high pressure laminate a modern choice for exterior cladding and ventilated facades. These weatherproof HPL panels — classified as exterior-grade compact laminate under ISO 4586-6 — resist UV, rain and temperature swings while delivering sharp, contemporary elevations — and when paired with our A-grade non-combustible board, they help projects meet demanding fire-safety codes. Whatever the application, our team can recommend the right HPL type, thickness and finish for the job.

FAQ

High pressure laminate FAQs

What is high pressure laminate used for?
High pressure laminate is used wherever a tough, decorative surface is needed. Common applications include kitchen and bathroom countertops, furniture and cabinetry, doors, wall and ceiling panels, flooring, toilet partitions, lockers, retail fit-outs and exterior building cladding. Its durability and huge design range make it suitable for both residential and commercial projects.
What is the difference between HPL and compact laminate?
Both are high pressure laminates. A standard HPL sheet is thin (0.6–1.2 mm) and must be bonded to a substrate such as MDF or plywood. Compact laminate is much thicker (2–25 mm) and self-supporting, so it needs no backing and is naturally water-resistant — ideal for partitions, lab tops and wet areas.
What is the difference between HPL and low pressure laminate (LPL)?
HPL is made from many resin-saturated kraft paper layers pressed under high heat and very high pressure, then bonded to a board. LPL fuses a single décor layer directly onto a board at lower pressure. As a result, high pressure laminate is denser, stronger and far more resistant to wear, scratches and moisture than low pressure laminate.
How thick are HPL sheets?
Decorative HPL sheets are typically 0.6 to 1.2 mm thick and are glued onto a substrate. Self-supporting compact laminate boards range from about 2 mm up to 25 mm. We can advise the right thickness for your application and offer cut-to-size on request.
What sizes do HPL sheets come in?
Our standard HPL sheet size is 4 × 8 ft (1220 × 2440 mm). Larger formats are available — 4 × 10 ft (1220 × 3050 mm), 4.3 × 10 ft (1310 × 3050 mm), 4 × 12 ft (1220 × 3660 mm), 5 × 10 ft (1525 × 3050 mm) and 5 × 12 ft (1525 × 3660 mm) — to minimise joints on larger surfaces, and we can cut panels to your exact dimensions.
Is high pressure laminate fire-rated?
Standard HPL is not non-combustible, but our A-grade non-combustible board is a fire-rated HPL that meets Class A / B1 fire-safety requirements. It is specified for facades, high-rise cladding and other projects with strict fire regulations. We can provide fire test certificates on request.
Is HPL waterproof and suitable for outdoor use?
HPL is highly moisture-resistant, and compact grades are essentially water-resistant, which is why they are used in bathrooms, kitchens and washrooms. For building facades and external applications, choose an exterior-grade or compact HPL engineered for UV and weather exposure rather than a standard interior sheet.
How do you clean and maintain HPL?
High pressure laminate is very low maintenance. For everyday cleaning, wipe surfaces with a soft cloth and warm water with a mild detergent, then dry. Avoid abrasive scouring pads and strong solvents. Because HPL is non-porous, it does not need sealing and stays hygienic with simple regular cleaning.
Can HPL be customised? Do you offer OEM?
Yes. Beyond our 1000+ stock designs, our art and custom boards let you print your own pattern, logo or artwork onto durable HPL. We also offer custom sizes, finishes and full OEM / private-label production for distributors and brands.
How much does HPL cost and how do I get a quote?
Prices depend on the type, thickness, design and quantity of laminate you need. As a manufacturer, we offer competitive factory-direct pricing. Send us your design, size and volume through our contact options or on WhatsApp and we will send a quotation quickly.
